SUMMERFEST

Summerfest in Milwaukee is the place to be this summer! If you have never been there it is a must do, if you haven't been there for a while, its time to go back.

This festival has seen over the years, Bob Hope, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, James Taylor, The Beach Boys, Arlo Guthrie, The Allman Brothers, Kenny Loggins, Tony Bennet, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson the list goes on and on.

Summerfest is set along the shores of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, it can be seen for miles, it is an outdoor event with many activities for people of all ages and back rounds. It covers 75 acres and is   the largest music festival in the world. The festival began in 1968 to a rocky start until it gained popularity over the years. It is now going strong with an attendance last year of 825,000. There is music, comedy, shopping, playground, magicians and so much more and then there is the food which is incredible.

The grounds consists of a series of music stages, food vendors, large playground and family centered area, shopping of all kinds, plenty of rest rooms and rest areas. You can hear music everywhere you go. You can eat until you can't eat anymore.

MARCUS AMPHITHEATER

This is a very large area and is the only area you have to pay extra for to see the act. This year some of the headliners include, Kenny Chesney, Bon Jovi, Willie Nelson, Kiss. You can see it might appeal to many different tastes in music. In the past I have seen Paul Simon, Rod Stewart, Dave Matthews just to name a few. But again for this stage you have to pay a separate fee for a ticket.

STAGES INCLUDED WITH ADMISSION PRICE:

MILLER LITE OASIS

BRIGGS AND STATTON BIG BACKYARD

HARLEY DAVIDSON ROADHOUSE

U.S.CELLULAR

M&I BANK CLASSIC ROCK STAGE

POTAWATOMI CASINO STAGE AND PAVILION

MOUNTAIN DEW ROCK STAGE

Each of these stages has music being performed all day by various bands covering, rock and roll, country, jazz, soul, polka, rap, new age, you name it I promise you it is here somewhere. During the day the bands are often bands you may not have heard of but have a chance to try something new. Towards the evening in the past times I was there, one stage was Alice Cooper, while Ray Charles on another and The Doobie Brothers on yet another. There are also comedy acts. This year Joan Jett, The Barenaked Ladies are just a few acts already scheduled. Sometimes they are acts that maybe aren't so big anymore, but its free to see them and it so much fun seeing acts you haven't seen in years. I have also caught some acts before they became well known so you might be catching something that you will love in the future.

FAMILY

During the day there is much for families to do including a nice playground, magic acts, a midway with rides, contest, legolands, sports activities. There are shopping areas all over the grounds which consist of tents with vendor after vendor displaying clothes, food, jewelry and more. You can get some food and just sit along the lake front at a picnic table and enjoy the music and the beautiful view of Lake Michigan. There are sometimes boating events going on and Milwaukee has a nice skyline. When it starts getting dark you will start to see an 18 or older crowd coming for the music. Some nights they have fireworks.

FOOD

I don't even know where to begin and end with the food. There are beer and beverage vendors every few steps. An ethnic village offers food from Germany, Mexico, Italy, China, Japan and so on. Every stage is surrounded by food. I will tell you my favorites and you will have to go and judge yourself. At Miller Lite Oasis, you must have the mozzarella marinara from Saz's. There is fresh roasted corn on the cob, every kind of sausage, hot dog or hamburger you can think of. Fresh homemade french fries, fried eggplant strips, PIZZA FROM THE STATE THAT KNOWS HOW TO MAKE PIZZA, chicken dinners, fish dinners, sandwiches, salads etc etc. For dessert, well you are in Wisconsin, ice cream, custard, hand dipped chocolates, pie, cake etc, etc. Are you full yet? Go and sit by the lake front now and relax and listen to the music, watch the people, feel the breeze coming off of the lake and enjoy your day at Summerfest.

What else can I tell you now make your plans and get up and GO TO SUMMERFEST. You won't regret it.

Cincinnati does something like this as well. Almost the entire summer except at Labor Day they do a massive fireworks show on the river that last close to a half hour of non-stop fireworks and great music.
